Higher tobacco age limit in force

Amazing a piece of Government legislation I am fully behind!

The new law making the sales of cigarettes to under 18's illegal is now in force and seems to have already started to work.

According to my 14 year old this law has had an immediate effect as there were only about 10 pupils in the "smokie" (down bog alley in my old school) at his school today rather than the normal 30-40. Seems like this has had an immediate impact on sales. It also make it easier for shopkeepers to say no to school kids who claimed they were 16.

Pensioner denies smoke ban breach

Apparently this is the first court case where a person has appeared in court charged with smoking in a prohibited place. Such an irony for a man with the name of Wraith to be done for smoking.

I'm frankly amazed by that, though from what I have seen the law does seem to be being obeyed wherever I have been.

When the law came in nearly a year ago now, I would have said that it would have been a regular occurrence.

Mind you from the story it appears that the guy may have been a little under the weather.

The final irony of appearing in court on National No-Smoking day is just exquisite!

Now to persuade my wife to kick the habit, or maybe I can just get the Kids to do it for me.

Thousands to police smoking ban

Up here in Scotland the smoking ban has been running for nearly a year now and with little or no requirement for this type of heavy-handed enforcement. Apparently

"In Scotland, there have been just 11 fixed penalty notices issued to premises in the last 10 months, with many councils having issued none at all."

The ban rolled in and people who smoked retired to the glorious outdoors making it both safer for us, the non-smokers, and getting the smokers outside for a decent breath of fresh air.

Most smokers now hanging about outside in their little shelters appear like lepers of the olden days but without the "Lepers Window" they used to have in places like churches.
